DevOps’ Next Level: Value Stream Management
Faster is not better if you are running full rate the wrong way. That’s the message coming in the nascent field of value flow direction (VSM), which attempts to refine and enhance the attempts of DevOps teams steeped from the Agile civilization of sprints and quick releases. VSM tools assist managers look past the numbers in their stopwatch to comprehend –and behave –the true value being delivered.
In his just-published report, “GigaOm Radar for Value Stream Management,” GigaOM VP of Research Jon Collins finishes a comprehensive exploration of this VSM distance that includes his previous record, “Key Criteria for Evaluating Value Stream Management,” printed this summer. The just-published Radar report gives a thorough breakdown and evaluation of VSM tools and sellers, providing IT decision makers the tools they will need to make informed decisions about a VSM setup.
“Back in the old world, we had very tightly defined lifecycles (remember waterfall?), which were too constraining and therefore dropped in the name of agility and speed. But this had the effect of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, resulting in fragmented, complex pipelines and a loss of visibility,” Collins stated in a meeting. “As more consistent approaches emerge, organizations will be better able to scale up their software-based innovation efforts. I shouldn’t find that exciting, but I do.”
Collins’ exploration shows a young business occupied by sellers taking different approaches to a frequent aim. He states that’ll change as the business matures and vendors become more persistent in their approaches. But for today, he finds two offerings–IBM and Tasktop–worthy of distance from the Leaders circle from the GigaOm Radar report (**Figure 1**). However, he sees promise in sellers like Digital.ai, Plutora, and CloudBees since they advance their own tooling.

How should IT decision makers approach this aging class of alternatives? Collins recommends a cautious strategy. He notes from the report that a number of options –Jira, GitLab, and ZenHub–are platform-specific, whereas some are made to integrate with varied toolsets to offer an extensive view. Functional approaches vary widely too.
There really are plenty of tough decisions confronting groups deploying VSM to empower intelligent review and evaluation of DevOps procedures, and they’re made harder thanks to the accelerated pace of advancement in the industry. A thoughtful way of picking a stage is crucial to make sure it will support your business’s needs now and in the long run.
