TAMPA, Fla. — The Buccaneers’ kicking carousel has allowed one off and the other one on.
The Bucs on Tuesday waived kicker Elliott Fry, following his disappointing performance in a scrimmage at Raymond James Stadium on Friday, and signed veteran Ryan Succop, who’ll challenge last year’s starter, Matt Gay.
Fry missed two kicks at the scrimmage, a 49-yard field goal and an additional point. Gay missed one kick out of 50-and yards. Coach Bruce Arians stated the Bucs have to see more consistency from the kicking position.

“We can’t miss extra points,” Arians stated Sunday.” We can not give away the simple points. Kicks within the 30-lawn line ought to be automatic.
“If you can reach on a 56-yarder, that is fantastic. But if we push down the ball into the 10 and overlook out a field goal, there is nothing that rips a group more apart on crime than simply,’Hey, we took the ball down the field. We did not receive any points’ So, that the’gimmes’ — who is the most persistent? If you are able to do this and kick 56, 57, today you are All-Pro.”
Succop, 33, has invested 11 seasons in the league between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans, making 82percent of the career field objectives and 97percent of the extra point attempts. He struck a listing 56 directly field goals within the 50, from 2014 into’17, based on ESPN Stats & Information.
Gay made 77.1percent of his field goals last year and 89.6percent of the extra points — 23rd and 28th in the league — and also proceeded 0-for-3 on field goal attempts in the season finale.
Gay’s power was around long field goals: He made 5 of 8 attempts from 50-plus yards last year. Most of his battles have come indoors 40 yards and at the south end zone, which will be open atmosphere, with wind not obstructed from the stadium’s decorative pirate boat.
“That finish is open, so occasionally the wind can swirl in and do a few different things. Sometimes you really feel like it’s going one way, and the ball moves another,” Gay said. “I really think that it’s to the point now where it is only a psychological thing. It’s more psychological than it really is what is happening with the wind or what is happening with anything, since it is known around the league which end zone is exactly what it is. Being capable to go in there and hit a fantastic ball if you are confident in your great ball, this ball will undergo. Make certain you take your lineup, you hope the line you chose and reach a good, solid ball.
“I think that’s the approach for me — and not reading too much into what’s going on there, because I think sometimes you play mind games with yourself.”
Gay is using a fresh kicking method by rounding his strategy in hopes of adjusting a few of their misses. He’s carrying the new contest in stride.
“Competition is the baseline of the NFL. Everybody’s fighting to get work and if you do not work, someone’s right there ready behind you, ready to take your place,” Gay said. “Competition will breed success, and I feel that the capacity of our staff this season is super-high, and that I feel that the kicking position is essential. … If I come in and do my thing and do my job, I’m confident in myself and take good care of everything I’m doing that will be me moving to the year.”
From 2010 into 2019, the Bucs had nine unique kickers try a field goal, tied together with all the Cleveland Browns for second among teams, based on ESPN Stats & Information. Only that the Chargers had more during this interval, together with 10.
